PETALING JAYA: An upbeat Jiao Zong (United Chinese School Teachers Association) chairman Ong Kow Yee said new Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik has agreed to meet the association's representatives after Hari Raya Aidilfitri to discuss recognition for UEC, Sin Chew Daily reported today.
Ong, who disclosed this in his speech to association members who gathered in Genting Highlands on Sunday for the annual general meeting cum executive committee election, said Jiao Zong is expected to also raise a number education issues it is grappling with, including problems faced by Chinese primary schools and Chinese independent schools, as well as its proposal for the formulation of an all-inclusive new education policy.
He hoped that the upcoming meeting would be a fruitful one for the association, which has, for decades, been fighting for better treatment for Chinese schools.
On the change in administration at the federal level, Ong said Jiao Zong will repeat to the Pakatan Harapan government what it had been asking the previous government for and hopes that Chinese education would receive fair treatment and be given bigger space to develop under the new government.
He felt that what is urgently needed now is the formulation of a more open education policy that ensures the propagation of the multi-stream education system, and fair treatment for and development of all mother-tongue education.
