JOHOR BARU: The Johor government has abolished the post of chief councillors in all local councils in the state as it moves ahead with its plan for the third vote.
Johor's Local Government, Science and Technology exco member Tan Hong Pin (pix) said this is to ensure a more democratic process in the local council.
Previously, many council decisions were made between the mayor or president of the council with the chief councillors.
"We remove the post so that all councillors can participate the decision-making process. It is more democratic," Tan said.
The decision to do away with the post was made at Johor's first exco meeting on May 23.
There are 14 local councils in the state, and new councillors will start work on July 1. They are appointed by the component party of Pakatan Harapan.
He told theSun that all representatives will be from component parties in PH, and the council would not include representatives from NGOs.
"We are pushing local government election as this is one of the promises in the PH Manifestos," Tan said. "But we only can do this after the Parliament amends the Local Government Act 1976."
