Perlis excos sworn in, political impasse ends

KANGAR: The power struggle in Perlis has come to an end with the swearing-in of the state exco members at the palace earlier today.
Eight assemblymen from Barisan Nasional (BN), including three women candidates, were sworn in as state executive councillors before the Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Syed Jamalullail at 11am today.
With that, the impasse has finally ended some 30 days after the 14th general election on May 9.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azlan Man, who was sworn in three weeks ago, witnessed the proceedings at Istana Arau here.
Notable absentees were Perlis Umno liaison chairman Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, who is the Arau MP and his brother Datuk Seri Ismail Kassim who is the Tambun Tulang assemblyman and Padang Besar MP Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin.
After the 14th general election, where BN won 10 out of the 15 state seats, Shahidan rejected Azlan's candidacy for the post of mentri besar on grounds that the latter does not have the support of the majority.
Azlan was, however, the choice of the palace.
This eventually led to a prolonged impasse in the formation of a state government.
