UK will assist M'sia in recovering its assets, rebuild finances: Treadell

KUALA LUMPUR: The United Kingdom (UK) has expressed its willingness to assist Malaysia to recover its illegal assets in the country, said High Commissioner to Malaysia Vicki Treadell.
Treadell, who met with Council of Eminent Persons (CEP) chairman Tun Daim Zainuddin today, said the UK would support the Malaysian government in rebuilding its finances.
"If any money is uncovered in due process and it belongs to Malaysia, the UK will support its repatriation, but there is a process and rule of law that need to be followed," she said when met outside Menara Ilham.
Asked on what topics were discussed with Daim, she said it was a broad discussion which included how the UK could help with the new government's reform agenda.
In a separate development, the Institutional Reforms Committee (IRC) led by Datuk K. C. Vohrah said the committee was almost done engaging with all relevant groups and would write its report soon.
Stating that there would be two more meetings after Hari Raya, he stressed that the committee was focused on cleaning up various government institutions, especially the Attorney-General's Chambers, Parliament, Election Commission and the Royal Malaysia Police.
"Changes are needed. We have received a lot of input and we are looking into them, and how the feedback would fit into the reforms needed," Vohrah said.
Also present during the meeting were the other four IRC members, Suhakam Commissioner Datuk Mah Weng Kwai, National Patriot Association President Brig-Gen (Rtd) Datuk Mohamed Arshad Raji, National Human Rights Society President Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan and Universiti Malaya Professor of Law, Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Shad Saleem Faruqi. — Bernama
