GOLDEN Screen Cinemas (GSC) and Samsung Electronics Malaysia recently introduced the latest technology in cinema, with the opening of a new cinema hall with a LED cinema screen by Samsung.
Located at GSC Mid Valley Megamall, the new Hall 11 (pix) utilises the Samsung Onyx Cinema LED screen instead of a projector, a first in Malaysia.
The screen is paired with world-class audio technology from Samsung’s Audio Lab, and JBL by Harman.
Audiences will be able to enjoy the Samsung Onyx Cinema LED screen at an additional RM1.50 on top of normal ticket price.
The Onyx first debut in April at CinemaCon 2018. It is the world’s first Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI)-compliant High Dynamic Range (HDR) LED theatre display.
One of its crowning features is its nearly infinite contrast ratio.
The biggest variant of the Onyx measures 10.3 metres wide, and 5.4 metres high. It is capable of displaying videos up to 4K, or 4096x2160 pixels resolution. The Onyx display in Hall 11 is slightly smaller, at 10.3m by 4.9m.
At the recent launch event, which was officiated by Samsung Malaysia Electronics president Yoon Soo Kim and GSC chief executive officer Koh Mei Lee, guests were treated to a screening of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom on the Samsung Onyx Cinema LED screen.
True enough, the images on the Onyx were sharper, and the blacks as dark as the unlit walls that framed the display.
Even with the lights in the hall switched on, the images on the Onyx remained unaffected.
The Onyx showed that it is indeed a step up from the modern projectors in cinemas.
But because it is so good and the images are not a projection, watching a movie on this display feels like watching a video on a large screen TV, instead of a film in a cinema.
The sound system has powerful seat-shaking bass and precise sounds. Nevertheless, it does not have the best soundstage, and is a little sharp to the ears.
Still, the Samsung Onyx Cinema LED screen looks to be the future of cinema. It may take time for some to accept the change, but it is already here.
