Unemployed man gets 30-month jail term for snatch theft offence

KUALA LUMPUR: A jobless man was sentenced to 30-months in prison by the sessions court for trying to snatch a retiree's gold chain last Monday.
Judge Dr Gan Chee Keong sentenced Junol Anak Inih, 22 after he pleaded guilty to the charge.
He was ordered to start serving his prison term from the date of his arrest on June 11 this year.
According to the charge, he had robbed Safiah Muhammad, 56, who was a Kuala Lumpur City Council (DBKL) retiree by trying to snatch her gold chain at the car park of Blok B, Program Perumahan Rakyat (PPR), Kepong Lama on June 11 at 12.15pm.
He was charged under Section 393 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum seven-year prison term and a fine upon conviction.
The man who was unrepresented pleaded for a lighter sentence while Deputy Public Prosecutor N. Joy Jothy asked for a deterrent sentence to serve as a lesson.
