ALOR STAR: Both PAS and Barisan Nasional (BN) may not fare well in Kedah in the event of a snap state election, said state DAP chairman Tan Kok Yew.
He said that the voters here have seen in a short time, the new constructive politics taking place, but most importantly; the people-centric policies such as zero - rating the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
Tan said when the costs of living is made bearable, the people are bound to be appreciative. Malaysians do not place too high of an expectation on their leaders, especially among the rural community.
"But we must serve, and we must fulfil promises."
"People have also seen the poor leadership skills displayed by BN after the coalition lost power for the first time in 61 years," said Tan in an interview.
He said the people of Kedah are also happy that the new prime minister is Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who has become the premier for the second time.
Tan said taking this into consideration, it would not be advisable to have fresh state elections in Kedah.
After last month's landmark 14th general election, Pakatan Harapan won 18 seats, while PAS has 15 and BN through Umno only has three seats.
The state has 36 state seats in total.
Tan said that based on the definition of seats, Pakatan has the most number of seats, while PAS and Umno are two separate parties.
Yesterday, Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir said the state speaker will be from PKR and the Deputy Speaker will be from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM).
PAS had reportedly campaigned for an impartial Speaker, while Mukhriz has settled for a veteran PKR activist.
The Deputy State Legislative Speaker is expected to be Datuk Juhari Bulat, the Air Hangat assemblyman, who is also a lieutenant of Mahathir in Langkawi.
To this, Tan said that it is best to reduce the politicking and focus on governing the state.
"Kedah needs much attention to inject real development in all areas from agriculture to services and manufacturing.
"It is time to work and deliver promises," he said.
