KUALA LUMPUR: A man, believed to be mentally unsound and a drug addict, stabbed his three-year-old niece more than 30 times at their house in Taman Kepong here yesterday.
The victim was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Desa Park City Hospital. She was stabbed with a sharp object.
The victim's grandmother found her drenched with her own blood in the storeroom and covered with a cloth at about 9.30pm.
Sentul district police chief ACP R. Munusamy said the incident occurred at a double-storey terraced home in Taman Kepong yesterday evening when the 21-year-old suspect visited the victim's family.
"The suspect drove there, and knocked on the front door repeatedly, almost forcing himself in before the grandmother allowed him in," he said.
"The suspect was playing with the victim in the presence of the grandmother, while the mother and younger sibling, a baby, were upstairs.
Half an hour later, the grandmother left the house, and the victim was said to be alone with the suspect downstairs. The grandmother returned and was horrified to make the chilling discovery. The unconscious blood-soaked victim was in the storeroom, while the suspect was upstairs playing with the younger sibling," Munusamy added.
The grandmother then alerted the child's mother, who then with the help of several neighbours, rushed the victim to the hospital.
The medical staff who checked on the victim then reported to police after discovering several stab wounds believed to be caused by a sharp object.
The remains were later sent to Hospital Kuala Lumpur for a post-mortem.
Police subsequently arrested the suspect from the same house at around 9.45pm, and are investigating all possible motives.
