KL police will re-investigate Altantuya Shaariibuu's murder (Updated)

KUALA LUMPUR: Police will re-investigate the murder of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu and forward its findings, if any, to the Attorney-General's Chambers for action, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said today.
Mohamad Fuzi, who confirmed the matter, said that the police will conduct their investigation and refer it to the deputy public prosecutor.
He added that police have re-opened the probe based on the old police report and a new one lodged at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief DCP Datuk Zainuddin Yaacob said police have recorded Setev Shaariibuu's statement after he lodged a police report on Wednesday, seeking a fresh investigation into the murder of his daughter.
"We can confirm a report was made by Setev Shaariibuu on June 20 at 12.03pm at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters.
"Police recorded statements from the complainant from 9am to 1.30pm, and will then refer the findings and investigation papers to the deputy public prosecutor's office," he said.
Setev and his lawyer, Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh, had met Attorney-General Tommy Thomas and Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad this week in an attempt to re-open the case on the 2006 murder of the Mongolian national.
Mahathir and Thomas reportedly agreed that further investigations should be carried out in view of newfound evidence.
In 2009, former police Special Action Unit personnel Sirul Azhar Umar and Azilah Hadri were found guilty of murdering Altantuya in Mukim Bukit Raja in Klang between 10pm on October 19, 2006 and 1am on October 20, 2006.
They were later released when an appeals court overturned the conviction in 2013 ruling that the High Court judge had erred.
The Federal Court, however, upheld their death sentences in 2015. Sirul had fled the country ahead of that ruling, while Azilah is now on death row.
