Pregnant woman among 9 nabbed over illegal world cup betting, RM98,653 seized

PENAMPANG: The police have detained nine people in connection with a 2018 World Cup football betting syndicate and seized RM98,653 in five raids between Monday and yesterday.
Sabah Police Deputy Commissioner, Datuk Omar Mammah said eight men, including an Indonesian and a pregnant woman were picked up during an operation, 'Op Saga', which was conducted in Penampang and Putatan.
He said the police believed the suspects were merely workers employed by the syndicate and would flush out the mastermind behind the network involved.
"In the raid, the police seized several items used in betting, among them being laptops, several booklets, cell phones, betting sheets, sim cards and a money counting machine," he told a press conference at the district police headquarters, here today.
Omar said the 20-year-old pregnant woman had since been released on police bail, while the eight men, aged between 22 and 37, would be remanded until June 24.
With the arrests, the police believe they have busted a 2018 World Cup football betting syndicate conducting illegal betting activities around Putatan and Penampang. — Bernama
