JASIN: The Malacca government will collect about RM2 million less revenue annually following the imposition of free parking for vehicles in the state on Saturday and Sunday effective June 15, 2018.
State Housing, Local Government and Environment Committee Chairman Tey Kok Kiew said the reduction in fee collection involved 27,880 vehicle parking bays under the jurisdiction of four local authorities in the state.
However, he said the lower collection would not give a huge impact on the state's revenue if cost-saving measures were implemented effectively.
"The free vehicle parking initiative was initially implemented in areas under the Malacca Historic City Council (MBMB) covering tourists spots, but later has been broadened to include three more areas under the jurisdiction of the local authorities.
"This is a promise by the state government under the leadership of Pakatan Harapan during the 14th General Election recently to ease the burden of the people, besides it being the responsibility of the government," he said to reporters after launching the Jasin Municipal Council's (MPJ) free parking on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays here, today.
Also present was MPJ President Mustaffa Ali.
Elaborating further, Tey said the vehicle parking fee collection in the state last year amounted to RM6.68 million involving three districts under the jurisdiction of four local authorities.
The highest collection was for areas under MBMB totalling RM4.2 million, followed by Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council (MPHTJ – RM2 million), Alor Gajah Municipal Council (MPAG – RM258,945) and MPJ (RM221,787).
"The highest number of vehicle parking bays was in MBMB areas amounting to 14,116 lots, followed by MPHTJ (8,497 lots), MPJ (3,055 lots) and MPAG (2,212 lots)," he added.
He said out of the total 27,880 parking lots in the state, some 6,021 lots are located in tourist hotspots while the remaining 21,859 lots are in other areas. — Bernama
