KUALA LUMPUR: A special body needs to be established to monitor the overall implementation of the Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) policy, said National Union of Teaching Profession (NUTP) president Kamarozaman Abd. Razak.
He said although a TVET Committee would be formed to upgrade the status of its education, a special body was also needed to provide views and advise the committee.
"The special body is needed to monitor and coordinate the development of TVET as currently it is being monitored by seven ministries that have their respective aims. We have yet to know whether the committee announced yesterday would be a comprehensive one or mainly for the purpose of education.
"The special body will also monitor and certify sole TVET certificates issued. This is to avoid confusion and reduce bureaucratic red tape, especially when submitting applications for TVET funds," said Kamarozaman in a press conference here today.
Yesterday, newly-appointed Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik announced in a press conference that a TVET Empowerment Committee, headed by Permatang Pauh Member of Parliament Nurul Izzah Anwar, who is also PKR vice-president, would be formed to prepare reports to upgrade TVET.
Kamarozaman also proposed to do away with the Skills Development Fund and for the funding of TVET be made through the National Higher Education Fund Corporation to facilitate the management and dissemination of funds.
Meanwhile, Nordin opined that the special body should include stakeholders such as NUTP, private skills training associations as well as employers' associations. — Bernama
