Kedah police disappointed with parents allowing minors to ride motorcycles

ALOR STAR: The Kedah police have expressed disappointment with the attitude of certain parents for allowing their underage children to ride motorcycles, leading to an increase in fatal accidents during the operation codenamed "Ops Selamat 13/2018", held from June 8 to 22.
Kedah Traffic Investigation and Enforcement chief Supt Zahari Mohamed said based on the statistics obtained, 14 people under the age of 20 were killed in 20 accidents involving motorcycles.
"Of the 30 accidents recorded, a total of 36 deaths also involved four pillion riders, eight car drivers and passengers, and four pedestrians.
"In this matter, I am disappointed with the attitude of parents who let their children ride motorcycles without a license, without thinking about the danger it posed to their children as well as other road users," he told reporters during a press conference at the Kedah Police Headquarters here, today.
He said that stern action could also be taken against parents in accordance with Section 39 (5) of the Road Transport Act 1987, where they could be fined up to RM2,000 or imprisonment for up to six months, or both, if found guilty.
Meanwhile, he said there were 32 cases of house break-ins recorded throughout the 15-day operation.
"We would like to draw attention to the fact that 28 of the cases involved houses whose owners did not inform the nearest police station of their prolonged absence before leaving town, although we had repeatedly advised to do so," he added. — Bernama
