GEORGE TOWN: Penang government may ban plastic straws and disposable containers to make the state cleaner, greener and healthier.
"This policy by the government is for Penang and Mother Earth," Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said during the launch of the state-level Plogclean programme at Karpal Singh Drive near here today.
He said community involvement in this is important, and the programme is a good start for the community to be part of the state government's effort.
Plogging is a combination of jogging and picking up rubbish and was introduced by Penang government during World Environment Day.
Originating from Sweden, it is a public activity initiated over the concern of plastic pollution.
Later when approached by reporters, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) Mayor Yew Tung Seang said the matter now is being deliberated by state exco in charge of environment Phee Boon Poh.
"Currently the proposal is being studied and discussion with state exco is ongoing", he said.
