JOHOR BARU: Johor recorded 13 deaths from drowning since last January up to June including the latest incident involving two children at a mine in Taman Suria, here, two days ago.
Assistant Director of Fire and Rescue Operations Division of the Johor Fire and Rescue Department Mohd Shukor Fadzil said statistics showed that, besides the two children, four other deaths were senior citizens while seven were adults.
"All 13 of these deaths were from 12 drowning cases, four of which were recorded in rivers and shores, two at sea, two at the mine and one at the lake," he told Bernama here today.
Mohd Shukor said negligence of safety was one of the factors contributing to the occurrence of drowning.
He said the public was still ignorant and take their safety aspects lightly despite the fact that many drowning cases were reported through the media.
He said "popular" neglected construction site for anglers was also considered dangerous to the public.
In this regard, Mohd Shukor believes that the local authorities should close or erect fences around the area to avoid being trespassed by the public.
"Parents are expected to monitor their children's movements, advising them to be careful and avoid dangerous pools while ensuring their children are under supervision.
"There is also a lot of cases where friends who intended to help their drowning friends also died because they did not have good swimming skill," he said.
Two days ago, a girl Norfifi Allysa Natalia Abdullah, 12, and a boy, Mohamad Affiq Afnan Abdur Razzaq, 9, drowned in a mine in Taman Suria, while bathing with their five friends.
Norfifi Allysa Natalia was found at 6.26pm while Mohammad Affiq Afnan, at 8.30pm, the same day.
Five survivors are her younger brother, Mohd Danish Ashraf Afidan Shah, 10, Rizman Ismail, 13, Ghismawi Ismail, 9, Muaz Ibrahim, 9 and Mohd Danish Omar, 10. — Bernama
