World Cup records: video referee speeds along penalty tally

26 Jun 2018 / 11:33 H.

Cristiano Ronaldo's missed penalty for Portugal against Iran on Monday was the 19th spot-kick of the World Cup so far - with the video assistant referee helping to ensure a record tally even before the end of the group stage.
The previous record was 18 penalties in 1990, 1998 and 2002 but that mark has been reached with only 36 of 64 games played in Russia. VAR has been involved in eight of the 18 awards so far, either confirming decisions or alerting on-field officials to fouls which had been missed.
Meanwhile, Russia's Denis Cheryshev's own goal against Uruguay earlier Monday was the sixth of the finals. Statisticians Opta say that only the 1998 tournament in France had as many mishaps. The current edition in Russia has also set an ongoing record of 36 matches without a goalless draw.
