KOTA BARU: Datuk Abdullah Ya'akub was appointed as the Speaker of the Kelantan State Legislative Assembly for the second consecutive term today.
His appointment was proposed by Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob and seconded by his deputy, Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah at the swearing-in ceremony of the Kelantan state assemblymen at the Kota Darul Naim Complex here.
Also being proposed as the Kelantan Deputy Speaker was Bukit Panau assemblyman Datuk Abdul Fattah Mahmood.
Abdullah is not an assemblyman, however, the Kelantan Constitution allowed an additional assemblyman to be appointed to discharge the duties of a Speaker.
After the appointment of the speaker and his deputy, all 45 assemblymen took their oath of office and signed the oath of allegiance before Abdullah.
The swearing-in ceremony involves 37 assemblymen from PAS and eight assemblymen from Barisan Nasional (BN).
The first Kelantan State Assembly sitting for the 14th term also agreed to appoint former lecturer of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam, Asmak Husin, 40, as a senator for a three-year term from July 1. — Bernama
