KUALA LUMPUR: Alam Flora collects more than 22,000 tonnes of domestic waste during the first 10 days of Syawal in three areas under its jurisdiction, namely Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Pahang.
Its chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Zain Hassan said the total collection decreased by almost 1,700 tonnes for the same collection period last year.
"Almost 70% of the overall waste collected was unfinished food, while the rest are garden and bulk waste.
"The drop in the waste collection may be due to the fact that many urban dwellers are still celebrating Aidilfitri in their hometown, it is anticipated that the collection will increase in the coming weeks from open house activities especially during the weekend," he said in a statement today.
He also urged the public to avoid wastage during an open house by practising the 5R concept of Refuse Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recovery.
"For instance, open house hosts are advised to use crockery that can be washed and reused while making sure that the amount of food provided is not excessive," he added.
The public can call Alam Flora Customer Service Centre at 1 800 88 7472 from 8 am to 8 pm to make complaints or inquiry. — Bernama
