FANCY surviving on a mere can of sardines daily?
Well, that's what a family of 12 has to endure – one can of sardines for their meal in order to survive as they are living in extreme poverty since the family's breadwinner passed away.
Devi Chinnadurai, a 41-year-old housewife, has been a single mother of her 11 children since her husband died from heart disease a month ago and is now living in the People's Housing Project (PPR) in Desa Rejang, Setepak.
She is now relying on her eldest son and her second daughter, who are 19 and 18 respectively, for their income in order to feed the family.
Both children work at an NGO and each makes a meagre RM1,000 per month, which, according to Devi, is not enough to support her family of 12.
Devi wants her children to have a nutritious and healthy diet.
"But the cost of food, buying rice is already over RM1,000, after which we need to buy vegetables. I also want to buy nutritious food for my children. What can I do, we're unable to afford. We only eat what we have," she said.
According to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), many children suffer the same fate as Devi's family.
The report revealed that one in 10 children are underweight and one in five have stunted growth in the PPR area and that weight loss was even more severe among Indian children.
