Ops Selamat 13: Careless, reckless driving main cause of fatal accidents

KUALA LUMPUR: Vehicles going out of control due to careless or reckless driving was the main factor for fatal accidents with 142 of the 235 recorded fatalities during Ops Selamat 13 which was carried out over the Hari Raya festive period.
However, the death toll this time showed a decrease of four cases or 1.7% compared to Ops Selamat 11/2017 during the same period last year which recorded 257 cases.
Inspector General of Police Tan Seri Fuzi Harun said as many as 22,411 accidents were recorded during Ops Selamat this time compared to 22,402 cases last year during Aidilfitri, registering a nine case increase.
"Many of the fatalities was due to loss of control of the vehicles. With a total of 142 cases due to reckless and negligent driving such as entering the opposite lane and carelessness when switching lanes," he said.
"In addition, statistics gathered also recorded motorcyclists deaths at 148 cases, cars (74 deaths), pedestrians (12 deaths), lorries (4 deaths), van (1 death), bus (1 death) and others with seven deaths," he told the media in a press conference during the closing of Ops Selamat for 2018 in conjunction with Hari Raya.
He said some 343,863 summonses were dished out during the Ops for various offences which was carried out from June 8 to 22 nationwide.
He said that 48 people tested positive for drugs and 37,973 reports of people going outstation had been received although it recorded a decrease of 2,184 reports compared to the previous year.
