Man jailed, fine for possession of wild animal meat

KUCHING: A man was sentenced to six months jail and fined RM10,000 by the Bintulu Sessions Court yesterday for possession of wild animal meat.
The Sarawak Forestry Department in a statement today said judge Norhamizah Saifuddin meted out the sentence on Karim Lidam, 46, who pleaded guilty to the charge.
Karim was charged with possession of 81.2kg of wild boar meat and 7.7kg of deer meat in a four-wheel-drive vehicle belonging to him at Pasar Tamu Bintulu on Dec 2 last year.
He was charged under Section 37(2) of the Sarawak Wildlife Protection Ordinance 1998 which provides an imprisonment for up to two years and fine of not more than RM25,000, upon conviction.
The prosecution was conducted by prosecuting officer Mohamad Muhaimin Zakaria, while Karim was unrepresented.
In the statement, the department also urged the public with information on illegal hunting and possession of wild animals in Sarawak to contact the State Forestry Department or 1-800-88-7777. — Bernama
