KUALA LUMPUR: Embattled former premier Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak has criticised the freezing of Umno's accounts in relation to the probe into 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
The Star Online reported Najib as saying that the 1MDB task force should zero in on individuals involved and freeze their accounts, not those belonging to the party.
Speaking in Pekan, Najib stressed that there is no guilt on Umno, adding that the party needs to function and run its divisions.
Najib who is Pekan MP, was speaking at the opening of the Pekan Umno meeting.
The authorities investigating the controversial state investment firm have frozen 900 accounts belonging to Umno, other political parties, and several individuals, as the probe into 1MDB widens.
In a statement issued yesterday, the 1MDB Special Task Force said the accounts were frozen over irregularities and misappropriation of funds from 1MDB.
According to a report by the New Straits Times, an alleged RM600 million from 1MDB was transferred into Umno's accounts.
It added that the authorities are trying to establish the money trail from 1MDB into Umno's accounts.
