BUTTERWORTH: Pelita Samudra Pertama (M) Sdn Bhd (Pelita) , which owns the Pelita Nasi Kandar restaurant chain, has donated RM100,000 to Tabung Harapan Malaysia as part of its social responsibility to the country.
Pelita executive chairman Datuk Shamsuri Ahmad said the donation from the nasi kandar restaurant chain was a sign of solidarity towards the nation.
"The donation is a testament of our patriotism to the country as Malaysia is our home, so, it is our collective responsibility to help the nation," he told reporters after the Pelita Aidilfitri Open House here today.
The donation was presented to Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow at the event.
The establishment of the fund was announced by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on May 30 to enable Malaysians to channel donations after it was made known that the government's debt had reached RM1 trillion.
Shamsuri said that at the event, 1,500 people including those with disabilities, dialysis patients, single mothers and schoolchildren received cash and essential goods from Pelita.
It also provided school vouchers and money for 320 schoolchildren from national schools and Chinese and Tamil vernacular schools, he added. — Bernama
