ARAU: The Raja Muda of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail has called on traders in the state to cease the use of polystyrene food containers due to its adverse effect on health.
He said the use of polystyrene that had been rampant at night markets and Ramadan bazaars recently showed that the traders and members of the public did not care less on the matter.
"I have been talking about this issue since 2012. In fact, an instruction against the use of polystyrene as food containers in every event involving myself has also been issued, but there are still quarters who do not seem to care," he said in his speech at the Universiti Malaysia Perlis' (UniMAP) Aidilfitri do today.
Prior to this, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin, who is also UniMAP Chancellor, had embarked on several initiatives involving the Perlis Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIPs) and Tuanku Syed Putra Foundation (YTSP), to stop the use of polystyrene food containers among the public.
Meanwhile, the Raja Muda also expressed his satisfaction with UniMAP after it was ranked 40th Best Universities in Southeast Asia 2018 by the QS World University Rankings.
He hoped that the university management would continue to implement programmes in the pursuit of excellence. — Bernama
