England manager Gareth Southgate has voiced full support for midfielder Fabian Delph, who has left the World Cup because his wife is about to give birth to their third child.
"There are things more important than football," Southgate told a news conference on Monday. "There is only one day in life when your children are born - it is very important that you have to be there for your family."
The midfielder left the England squad in Russia after the last group game against Belgium and is now hoping to be back soon. Southgate quipped that Delph was feeding his wife, Natalie, curries to speed up the proceedings, with England's next game Tuesday against Colombia. "He has been exceptional. He is desperate to support us, desperate to be with us," Southgate said.
