Miti to discuss Malaysia's positioning as major trade player

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of International Trade and Industry (Miti) will have a thorough discussion with Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on trade policy and the government's direction in positioning Malaysia as a major player in trade and industry, said newly-appointed minister, Darell Leiking.
Strengthening Malaysia's position in trade is the top agenda and he would like to get views from Mahathir as well as from a more detailed trade policy discussion at the Cabinet meeting tomorrow.
"It is too early to comment on it (trade matters) as this is the first day of us entering office. Today's focus should be on the smooth transition from former minister, Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, to me," he said at the handover ceremony here today.
On entering his office, Darell said he wanted to have a new culture where everyone could always communicate to each other.
He added that Mustapa had also promised his availability to provide advice and guidance if needed.
Regarding the European Union's proposed curbs on palm oil, Darell said Miti would work closely with the Primary Industries Ministry, led by Teresa Kok, to understand the issues, particularly the reasons for the move.
Asked on the government's stance on reviewing foreign investments, Deputy Minister Dr Ong Kian Ming cited the positive response to the opening of Alibaba's first Southeast Asian office in Malaysia.
"This is a good investment for Malaysia as well as the Chinese company. The positive dialogue that Jack Ma had with Tun Mahathir as well as as the Finance Minister is an indication that we will welcome more of this type of value-added investments here in Malaysia," he explained.
Meanwhile, Mustapa declined to comment on the trade direction of the country, saying he would respond on the matter in Parliament, which will start its new session on July 16.
"This is not my show, not my platform, and I'll do that in Parliament," he said.
Mustapa served as the Miti minister for nine years. — Bernama
