SHAH ALAM: The speedy deportation of Umno Red Shirt leader Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos, who is wanted for a string of offences, will depend on Indonesia and its police force.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said Jamal was in good condition when he was arrested on Monday.
"We can't give a specific date or timeline on when Jamal will be deported here but the speed of the process will depend on the agreement and cooperation with the Indonesian counterparts," he told reporters when met at the Selangor police contingent Hari Raya celebration today.
When asked about the details of the arrest, Fuzi declined to elaborate further and insisted that the police are looking forward to bringing Jamal back and taking appropriate action against him.
"I am unable to provide details on Jamal's arrest though I contacted the Indonesian police personally. Our focus is on the next course of action which is to bring him back soon," he added.
Fuzi added that police suspected that Jamal had used a "laluan tikus" (illegal route) to flee the country.
Meanwhile, Immigration Department director-general Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali has refuted claims where Jamal actually escaped to Indonesia via legal channels.
"When enforcement agencies request us to blacklist someone for a probe, we will follow the request. We won't know the truth if the particular blacklisted person escaped via illegal channels, like escaping to neighbouring countries via a boat," he said.
Jamal was arrested in Indonesia at 6.15pm after eluding law enforcement for more than a month.
Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had said that Indonesian police had notified Malaysia of Jamal's arrest.
Jamal, 48, was under investigation for a total of nine offences, of which the charges for the remaining six cases are expected to be mounted on the fugitive in stages in the near future.
While in hiding for the last month, the escapee nominated himself as a candidate for the post of Umno Youth chief, but failed in being elected after receiving dismal support from party members.
On another issue, Fuzi confirmed that the federal police will not form new police units to replace the elite task forces that will be disbanded as part of a revamp of the force.
"We won't be forming any new police unit to replace them. We will reorganise the existing team to be incorporated into specific departments like CCID, CID and NCID," he said.
