KUALA LUMPUR: Media practitioners were at court as early as 5am today, awaiting former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak, who is expected to face more than 10 counts criminal breach of trust (CBT) linked to the SRC International Sdn Bhd case.
By 6.30am, the front of the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex was crowded with journalists who would only be allowed into the court compound after 7am.
Najib is expected to be charged at the sessions court here at 8.30am in front of senior judge Datuk Zainal Abidin Kamarudin, and then transferred to the Criminal High Court 1 before Justice Datuk Azman Abdullah.
Hours before his arrest, Najib had posted a video on hie Facebook apologising to Malaysians for his "shortcomings", but maintained his innocence in the light of the onslaught of prosecution he is facing.
"I would like to apologise to all Malaysians. You deserve the best of leaders. I have done everything I could. However, I realise that it isn't enough, and I admit that there are many shortcomings," he said in the video message.
"It's true, our home was raided for days. Yes, I am being investigated and there are goods that have been confiscated. However, none of this is conclusive. There is a lot of news going around, pictures being spread, that are false, twisted and slanderous," he added.
Najib said no one can escape divine justice although they maybe in power when they spread rumours to shame others.
He was arrested by the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) yesterday at 2.35pm at his house on Jalan Langgak Duta, Kuala Lumpur according to a statement by the 1MDB task force that is undertaking investigations on the scandal.
The task force made up of former Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail, former MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed, current MACC Chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Mohd Shukri Abdull and police Special Branch director Datuk Abdul Hamid Bador.
Najib had gone to the MACC headquarters twice earlier to have his statement recorded over the investigation into a case related to SRC International.
Four red Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) trucks and a police truck entered the court complex at around 7.35pm.
There are about 20 supporters of the former prime minister here holding up banners emblazoned with “Solidariti for Najib Tun Razak”, “Respect civil rights”, “#freenajib”.
Umno’s Puteri head for Pekan Sida Tantiana Sariat was one among Najib’s supporters who said that they were there for solidarity with the former premier as he has not been proven guilty.
“There is no concrete evidence to charge him that’s why we are asking for his civil rights to be respected,” she said.
She added that they left from Pekan last night to be here this morning.
