KUALA LUMPUR: A team from the Selangor Criminal Investigation Department set off for Indonesia today to bring back Red Shirt leader Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos who was arrested there on Monday.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said the CID team comprising three personnel will be sent to Indonesia to facilitate the deportation of the fugitive.
"I can't give an exact timeline of when we'll get him back as the process may very well be delayed, but Jamal should be on Malaysian soil within two days," he told reporters at City police Hari Raya open house in Cheras district police headquarters here today.
He said the cooperation with the Indonesian counterparts has been going on well so far and he expects Jamal's deportation process to be completed within two days.
Jamal was arrested in Indonesia at 6.15pm after eluding law enforcement for more than a month.
Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had said that Indonesian police had notified Malaysia of Jamal's arrest.
Jamal, 48, was under investigation for a total of nine offences, of which the charges for the remaining six cases are expected to be mounted on the fugitive in stages in the near future.
While in hiding for the last month, the escapee nominated himself as a candidate for the post of Umno Youth chief but failed in being elected after receiving dismal support from party members.
Meanwhile, Mohamad Fuzi said they will continue to cooperate with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in cases which are associated with former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak and the 1MDB scandal.
"If situation permits, of course we would not want to delay the completion of the probe linking Najib. However, the probe linking him is not an easy task. Upon completion, we have to wait for the deputy public prosecutor's orders for the next course of action," he added.
On Tuesday, Mohamad Fuzi had said the ex-PM would be called in to give his statement soon.
