PUTRAJAYA: Billionaire financier Low Taek Jho, also known as Jho Low, who is wanted by the authorities to assist in investigations into the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, had given police the slip in Hong Kong
Revealing this today, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said police had sent a team to Hong Kong recently, but unfortunately Jho Low had left for Macau.
"The other day, we were informed that Jho Low was in Hong Kong and we dispatched our team immediately to the southern Chinese City but he left to Macau as soon we arrived. This is the latest information we know about him," he told reporters at the Home Ministry's Hari Raya open house here today.
The Immigration Department on Wednesday said that Jho Low's passport had been cancelled.
Last month, reports surfaced that Jho Low, who was identified by authorities as a deal maker in 1MDB transactions, was prepared to meet Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigators in Dubai.
However, MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Mohd Shukri Abdull issued a statement recently and said that the anti-graft agency would not interview Jho Low in Dubai and he should come back to Malaysia to be quizzed.
Meanwhile, on another matter, Mohamad Fuzi said police are not deporting controversial Muslim preacher Zakir Naik.
He denied reports on online news portals, including ones based in India, that the controversial speaker will be handed over to Indian authorities on Wednesday night.
"We have no plans to extradite Zakir in the coming days. On police's side we are not going to deport him but I'm not sure about other agencies," he added.
