KUALA LUMPUR: The main suspect behind the murder of a five-month-old baby boy, who was found dead inside a refrigerator at his babysitter's house in Taman Nakhoda, Batu Caves, was brought back to the scene of the crime today.
Her presence with heavy police escort drew a large crowd of onlookers.
Gombak district police chief ACP Ali Ahmad said police walked through what happened that fateful night with the 33-year-old suspect, as part of its investigations.
Meanwhile, a former resident of Kampung Nakhoda who wished to remain anonymous said illegal nanny services is big 'business' in the neighbourhood and its surrounding areas.
Kampung Nakhoda, and neighbouring areas in Sungai Tua in the Batu Caves area such as Kampung Laksamana and Kampung Bendahara are largely Malay settlements where inherited family land lots and village homes were redeveloped from the 1980s onwards.
He said its younger residents mostly work in the Klang Valley with many either not able to afford the services of licensed nurseries or day care centres or find them too far or cumbersome to send and fetch their children.
This is where the home-based nanny services come in, and the majority of these nannies are elderly ladies such as grandmothers or homemakers who now have very little to do at home.
The former resident, who stayed in Kampung Nakhoda for almost 25 years, said at least one in five households there offer these services as young couples find them affordable, flexible and logistically convenient.
It is not surprising, therefore, to see these nannies minding 7-8 children from different couples at any one time, with RM200-RM300 being charged per child.
He said while the older nannies have the experience and knowledge for this sort of work, it is the emerging younger ones that are a source of concern as they view it as more of a job rather than responsibility.
"Some of them aren't even mothers but young women who can't find employment and need some source of income," he said.
Their lack of experience in handling young children, not to mention, lack of patience, can sometimes be a problem, he said.
Police arrested the babysitter and her housemate to facilitate investigations into the murder.
The body of Adam Rayqal was found in the freezer compartment of the refrigerator on the second floor of the house at about 11pm on Tuesday.
