PETALING JAYA: Jasin Umno Wanita chief Datuk Zaleha Bujang said she will donate a piece of her jewellery to help former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak foot his legal fees.
In a video on her Facebook page, she announced that a bangle of hers will go towards the fund.
"On this Friday morning, I would like to give up this bangle which I am wearing, which I love, for the Tabung Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
"May Allah protect Najib from attempts to victimise him," she said in the video as her peers cheered her on.
She also captioned the video as follows: "For the beloved party Umno, a donation for Tabung Najib."
In response, Najib thanked the Umno leader in a tweet.
"I am very touched by Jasin Umno Wanita chief Zaleha's willingness to sacrifice her favourite bangle for the fund to aid in my bail," he tweeted.
A group of Najib supporters had launched the fund for him on Thursday to help with his bail and legal fees.
According to the Facebook post of the fund's organiser, Datuk Mohd Razlan Muhammad Rafii, the fund had raised RM204,393 as of 3.30pm on Friday.
On Wednesday, Najib claimed trial to three counts of criminal breach of trust and another charge of abuse of power involving RM42 million linked to SRC International Sdn Bhd, a former subsidiary of 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The argument for bail took about an hour before it was fixed at RM1 million by High Court judge Datuk Mohd Sofian Abd Razak.
Attorney-General Tommy Thomas proposed for bail to be set at RM4 million in cash, to which Najib's lead counsel Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah objected, saying that it was too high an amount.
Muhammad Shafee said that his client was not a flight risk and asked for a bail of between RM500,000 and RM800,000 instead.
The bail was eventually set at RM1 million with two sureties. The court also agreed for the bail payment to be in two installments.
Najib left the court complex after paying RM500,000 on Wednesday. The remainder will be paid on Monday (July 9).
