KUALA LUMPUR: A man was killed and three others injured when a car, moving against the flow of traffic, crashed into another car, causing a three-vehicle pile up along the Maju Expressway (MEX) on Saturday morning.
City Traffic Investigation and Enforcement chief ACP Zulkefly Yahya said the accident occurred at 3.30am along Km10.7 of the highway.
"The deceased was identified as Juhan Sabturani, 36, a Sabahan, who was the passenger of the car which was crushed by the car that was on the wrong side of the road. He suffered head injuries.
"The injured victims were two occupants from the crashed car as well as the driver of the other vehicle," he said today.
Preliminary investigation at the scene revealed that the alleged offender was driving against traffic on the right lane of the highway.
Juhan, a bodyguard, was a passenger in one of the cars which was part of a four-car convoy on the way back to Putrajaya from Kuala Lumpur. When the alleged offender crashed into the first car, the other three cars crashed into it as they failed to stop in time.
The victims were all sent to the University Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre for treatment.
Zulkefly said there were no closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at the scene.
All the vehicles involved in the case will be inspected by the Chemistry Department and Puspakom, and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
At press time, the alleged reckless driver, a 27-year-old man, was being treated for head and leg injuries.
The driver has yet to be interviewed by the police and details on why the car was driving against traffic are unknown.
Meanwhile, in Tawau, four men were killed and another man broke his left leg after they were hit by a car while they were resting at the BDC (1Arena) Commerical Centre parking lot at Jalan Chong Thien Vun early this morning, said police.
In the 1.15am incident, the car driven by a 34-year-old woman also rammed into a van and two other cars.
Tawau district police chief ACP Fadil Marsus said initial investigations revealed the incident was due to the negligence of the woman, who was believed to be drunk while driving and failed to control her car.
Fadil said the four victims killed were identified as Hiew Nyuk Wei, 30, Clawence Wong Vun Kit, 21, Dicson Lim Kien Shing, 16, and Chong Wei Chan, 21 while the injured victim is Chin Guan Xiong, 21.
The victims killed in the incident were sent to Tawau Hospital for post-mortem, while the two injured were also brought to the same hospital for treatment.
