Croatia official fined by FIFA over Ukraine video

Football's world governing body FIFA has fined a Croatian official 15,000 Swiss francs (15,000 dollars) for unsporting behaviour following a video posted on social media after the team's victory in a penalty shoot-out over Russia.
The official, Ognjen Vukojevic, had earlier Monday been relieved of his duties by the Croatian football federation HNS and had his accreditation revoked.
The federation apologized to Russia for the video and said Vukojevic and defender Domagoj Vida also apologized for comments made in the video.
FIFA said in a statement its disciplinary committee sanctioned Vukojevic as a result of the video in which he stated, "This is a victory for the Dynamo (Kiev) and for Ukraine!"
The committee said it took into consideration that both the official and the Croatian federation apologized in a timely manner, and the federation "promptly adopted internal measures."
Vukojevic, a former Croatian international, was the team observer and played with Vida at Dynamo Kiev. After Croatia's quarter-final win over Russia, Vukojevic posted a video with Vida in which the player also shouted "glory to Ukraine."
Vida, who left Dynamo in 2017, told Russian portal sports.ru it had "nothing to do with politics," but was a joke for friends. In its statement, the Croatian federation said: "HNS hereby apologizes to the Russian public for the actions of a member of the Croatian delegation.
"Ognjen Vukojevic and Domagoj Vida likewise apologize for their statements, which were in no way intended to have political connotations, yet which unfortunately left room for such interpretations."
Croatia meet England in the semi-finals on Wednesday. Vida was issued with a warning by FIFA over the incident. Russia currently faces international sanctions over the country's role in the Ukraine conflict.
The sanctions were first adopted in July 2014 following Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimea peninsula and its support for separatists in the country's east.
