MACC urged to investigate three mega projects in Terengganu

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has been urged to investigate three questionable mega projects in Terengganu that cost close to RM1 billion.
Terengganu Amanah chairman Datuk Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah (pix) said the three projects – Taman Ilmu in Besut, Stadium Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin in Gong Badak and the Tasik Kenyir duty free zone in Kenyir – which started development about 10 years ago, are still yet to be completed.
"About RM1 billion worth of projects, and all are problematic. This is the reason why I am here today, to lodge a report, because I believe we need to address them," he told reporters at the MACC headquarters, here, today.
Speaking about Taman Ilmu, Raja Kamarul said the RM230 million project, which started in 2005, was still not open to the public and has been involved in a number of court cases.
"Why do they keep delaying it, and why are there so many problems with the project? Also, why hasn't the state government acted on it yet?" he questioned.
Raja Kamarul, who is Kuala Terengganu MP, said similarly, the completion of the RM320 million, 50,000 capacity stadium, which was initially opened to the public in May 2008 before being closed a year later due to a roof collapse, has been postponed on a number of occasions.
"The authorities have also yet to act on those involved with the development of the stadium following the roof collapse. So we want MACC to reopen the file and act on the perpetrators," he said.
The RM300 million duty-free area in Tasik Kenyir, meanwhile, has not been fully operational despite its official opening in August 2017 after delays.
"I am calling for the MACC to investigate these three projects. The question is why hasn't there been any prosecution after so many years," he asked.
