PUTRAJAYA: The government has no plans to increase the salaries of ministers and government MPs, but will cut those in the private sector, particularly government-linked companies (GLC).
Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the pay received by MPs and Cabinet members are not high, and some high-ranking officers in the GLCs are earning exorbitant amounts.
"I know the salaries of the MPs are lower compared with the private sector. We don't want to be too much lower than them, so we are reducing the salary of the private sector," he said, drawing laughter from the press today.
"Do you know that some people who run some of the GLCs get as much as RM7 million a year?"
Mahathir was responding to a question if the government plans to increase ministers and MPs' salaries as they are earning much lower than those in the private sector, including lawyers and doctors.
Mahathir had previously on May 23, announced that Cabinet ministers have agreed to take a 10% salary cut, a move to reduce government spending.
Commenting further on the matter, the Pakatan Harapan chairman said he was only earning about RM20,000 per month when he stepped down as the fourth prime minister in October 2003.
