SHAH ALAM: Selangor police have detained 166 people suspected to be involved in gambling activities over the 2018 World Cup, with bets reaching RM1.2 million.
Selangor Police Chief Datuk Mazlan Mansor said they included five Indonesians aged between 20 and 50 years, and were detained in separate raids through the Ops Soga operations held between June 15 and last Sunday.
"A total of 146 raids were conducted in 16 districts in Selangor, including on a counting centre in Bandar Damai Perdana, Kajang on June 30," he said in a press conference here today.
He said from the raids, police seized 171 handphones, 17 computer processors, 34 monitors, 34 keyboards and four laptops.
He said most of the activities were conducted online, using handphones as the main medium.
"Online gambling is seen as more convenient as it could be conducted anywhere, including at home and in food outlets ... our investigations also found the bets start from as low as RM10 right up to RM5,000, depending on the match and favourite teams.
"A total of 146 investigation papers have been opened under Section 6 (1), Section 6 (3) and Section 4 (1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953," he said. — Bernama
