Acid attack victim an employee of Bursa in corporate surveillance

KUALA LUMPUR: The acid attack on a man at Jalan Raja Chulan here is believed to be related to his work in corporate surveillance with Bursa Malaysia, said police.
Police are in the process of ascertaining the motive behind the attack where the victim suffered burns to his back and face after acid was splashed on him by two assailants in front of Olympia Tower, here on Tuesday.
A source told theSun that the victim, who is in his 40's, is an employee in Bursa Malaysia and he is mostly tasked to probe short-selling activities.
Short-selling is the sale of a security that is not owned by the seller or that the seller has borrowed.
He said the victim actually had lodged two police reports on separate incidents before this.
"We are still ascertaining whether the old cases have a link with the current one. At the end of last year, he lodged a police report over his car being vandalised and earlier this year, he received a threatening phone call.
"The victim believes in both cases, it is related to his work," the source added.
However, a Bursa spokesperson said he was in corporate surveillance and not investigating short-selling.
Police have yet to record the victim's statement as they are still waiting for his condition to improve.
Investigations are underway and several statements have been recorded so far.
On Tuesday night, Dang Wangi deputy district police chief Supt Rudy Abdullah said the attack took place at about 6.35pm.
Police were informed that two men on a motorbike had thrown acid at a car driver through the car window.
Rudy said a preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was driving alone during the accident, adding that the two attackers were clad in black jackets and black helmets.
The duo had apparently had enough time to break the car window before splashing the acid at the victim.
The victim suffered 12% to 20% burn injuries to his back and the right side of his face. He is in stable condition.
The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means.
