PUTRAJAYA: The new Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) chairman will take a pay cut, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said today.
"Whoever takes over must agree to a pay cut. As for the quantum, I will announce that later," Loke said.
He confirmed that several names have been submitted to Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to replace Mavcom executive chairman Tan Sri Gen (Rtd) Abdullah Ahmad who is expected to step down.
"It is the prerogative of the prime minister to make the appointment, but I hope it is made soon to ensure continuity in Mavcom," Loke said after flagging off a Porsche convoy to Bangkok in conjunction with its 70th anniversary celebration today.
It had been previously revealed that Abdullah's salary was about RM85,000 a month – four times more than the prime minister.
The Porsche Owners Club Malaysia also donated RM25,000 to Tabung Harapan Malaysia before embarking on the trip.
In GEORGE TOWN, as a gesture of appreciation for Mahathir, a group from Roti Bakar Hutton Lane celebrated the premier's 93rd birthday in style and contributed RM1,000 to Tabung Harapan Malaysia.
In a small event at Jalan Phee Choon today, the group from the established roti bakar family business at the heritage enclave prayed that Mahathir will continue to spearhead the nation.
Group spokesman Hamid Sultan Abdul Jabbar, 58, said the event was to celebrate Mahathir's birthday and also to pray for his good health.
"We really hope he will be granted long life," he said.
A chocolate-vanilla cake was also brought in to celebrate the premier's birthday by Ahmad Ansari, who currently runs the business.
Mahathir's wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah, will also celebrate her birthday on July 12.
The Tabung Harapan Malaysia fund stood at RM143,611,040.47 as of 3pm today.
