Former IGP Ismail Omar admitted as advocate & solicitor of High Court of Malaya

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar has been admitted as an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya.
Ismail, 65, who is currently The New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Bhd (NSTP) Non-Executive Independent Chairman, who holds a Bachelor's Degree in Law with Honours from the International Islamic University, is the most senior petitioner in terms of age who was admitted and registered as an advocate and solicitor, during a proceeding before High Court Judge Datuk Nordin Hassan today.
Earlier, lawyer Mad Diah Endut as a mover introduced Ismail by presenting his background as a petitioner.
Mad Diah said the petitioner (Ismail) is the fifth of 10 children of Omar Rahman and Hasnu Ariffin and had followed his father's footstep in becoming a member of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).
He said Ismail was appointed as the ninth IGP on Sept 13, 2010 and among his achievements were leading the force in flushing out Sulu intruders during the Lahat Datu intrusion in 2013 and solving the murder case involving cosmetic millionaire Datuk Sosilawati Lawiya in Morib, Selangor, in 2010.
"After retiring from PDRM on May 17, 2013, Ismail was appointed as the Malaysian Ambassador to France between 2013 and 2015," he said adding that the petitioner had completed his chambering under the supervision of his master Datuk Khairul Anwar Rahmat at Messrs Khairul A. & Co.
Khairul then put the lawyer's robe on Ismail, symbolising that the latter is now an advocate and solicitor.
Meanwhile, Ismail, who was accompanied by his wife, Puan Sri Suriati Md Sobri, told reporters that he would continue to serve the people as an advocate and solicitor to uphold justice.
"I will probably get myself involved in non-governmental organisations (NGOs) ... to help the people and those who do not have the opportunity to defend themselves," he said. — Bernama
