Pan Island Link highway to cut travelling time

GEORGE TOWN: The proposed Pan Island Link (PIL 1) connecting Gurney Drive to the airport and the Second Penang Bridge, which passes through Gottlieb Road, will help solve traffic woes and cut travelling time.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the proposed highway will alleviate the heavy traffic load at Lebuhraya Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu, Pengkalan Weld, Jalan Masjid Negeri, Jelutong and Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah.
He said it also addresses traffic dispersal from the newly-­opened Second Penang Bridge and the proposed undersea tunnel.
Chow was speaking to the media during a press conference at Komtar today. Also present were state Public Works and Utilities committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari and other exco members.
Upon completion, the PIL 1 highway will be a major step towards improving road networks and alleviating traffic congestion on the island.
The proposed highway will be implemented under the first phase of the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP).
Chow said the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) (Second schedule report) for the PIL 1 Highway project is open for viewing until Aug 10.
The public can view the report at the National Library in Kuala Lumpur, Department of Environment (DOE) library in Putrajaya, state government complex in Komtar, Penang Island City Council Town Hall in Padang Kota Lama, Seberang Prai Municipal Council in Jalan Perda, state DOE office in Kepala Batas, Penang Public Library Corporation in Seberang Jaya, Penang Development Corporation in Bayan Lepas, Ayer Itam police station and the Botanical Gardens administrative complex in Jalan Kebun Bunga.
"The EIA consultant will respond to the DOE on all the written comments received from the public during the display period," he added.
