Popular nasi kandar eateries shutdown for poor hygiene

GEORGE TOWN: The state health department has ordered the closure of 12 food outlets for two weeks for violating hygiene and health standards.
State health department director Dr Wan Mansor Hamzah said the operation was carried out on a total of 29 food outlets, including several well-known nasi kandar restaurants on Thursday night.
He said enforcement officers found rat and cockroach droppings inside the kitchen area and staff at one of the outlets were also seen washing plates near the garbage bin.
The operation involved nasi kandar restaurants located along Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, Little India and other food outlets along Lebuh Chulia.
Wan Mansor Hamzah said a total of 62 notices were issued to the operators with compounds amounting to RM59,400.
He said the inspection was part of the Cleaner Penang Operations by the state health department.
