MCA's Wee hits out against Umno's Ismail Sabri over latter's UEC comments

MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong has asked Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to stop making misleading statements about the UEC (Unified Examination Certificate).
He said the incorrect information Ismail has about UEC has resulted in the latter issuing biased and misleading statements, the Chinese press reported.
"He (Ismail) made remarks about UEC without verification. They are not only erroneous but have also resulted in a big misunderstanding about the certificate, which is detrimental to Chinese independent schools (in the country)," Wee said in a statement on Saturday pointing out the misinformation Ismail spread about UEC.
He said for example, both Chinese independent school syllabus and UEC examination are determined and handled by the Dong Jiao Zong Chinese Independent Schools Working Committee.
UEC is recognised not just by "a small circle", he said, pointing out that it is in fact certified by Malaysia, China, England and Japan for ISO9001: 2008 in quality management since 2011.
He said apart from being recognised by most private higher institutions in the country, "UEC is also recognised by more than 1,000 private and public higher education institutions overseas".
"And holders of UEC can apply for admission into the first year degree programmes in overseas universities, including those in England, the United States, Australia, Japan, Singapore and China."
Wee also reminded Ismail that recognising UEC is one of the 14 points in the Barisan Nasional's (BN) 14th general election manifesto.
"If the Malays are really against UEC's recognition (as stated by Ismail), how is it that Pakatan Harapan, which stressed on recognising the certificate it its election manifesto, was able to garner the support of the various ethnic groups in the country and won the election with 121 parliamentary seats?"
