Police believe bad debts behind Friday night shooting in Cheras

KUALA LUMPUR: Police investigators believe that the motive behind a gunman opening fire at a nightspot in Taman Maluri, Cheras here on Friday was over debts owed to certain parties linked to the criminal underworld.
Sources said certain clues obtained in the case pointed towards bad debts as the cause of the incident and the shooting was meant to intimidate the debtor into paying up.
As the 5.56mm calibre of the spent ammunition casings recovered at the scene is commonly used in assault rifles such as the AR-15 or M-16, it was initially feared the case was linked to terrorists but police have ruled this out.
Although police have in their possession closed-circuit television(CCTV) footage of the gunmen, it was described as being of extremely poor quality.
On Friday at 9.30pm, a gunman opened fire at the nightspot and left after leaving behind 18 copies of paper that had the photos of two men on them.
The case is also being investigated for links to another similar shooting about three weeks ago at another nightspot at Jalan Bukit Bintang.
