KUALA LUMPUR: Police have detained 166 men including three foreigners in a month-long operation, dubbed "Ops Soga VII", for their alleged involvement in the 2018 World Cup football gambling activities.
City police chief Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim said all the suspects, aged between 18 and 65, were picked up in various locations in the federal capital by a special task force team from the Anti-Vice, Gaming and Secret Societies Division (D7) of the Kuala Lumpur Police Contingent Headquarters.
"Police had conducted 159 raids citywide until last Sunday with the betting money amounting to RM5 million," he told a press conference at the Bukit Jalil police station here today.
Mazlan said police had seized 168 mobile phones, five computers, three laptops and RM8,339 in cash.
The organisers had promoted the gambling activities on WhatsApp and WeChat mobile applications, he added. — Bernama
