KUALA LUMPUR: The appointment of Prof Dr Mohamed Hatta Shaharom as chairman of the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) Board of Governors will boost the core functions of the agency in upholding the status of Bahasa Melayu as the national language.
DBP director-general Datuk Abdul Adzis Abas said the agency was confident that Mohamed Hatta's appointment will assist Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik in his efforts to uphold Bahasa Melayu not just as the national language but also at the regional and global level through the National Language Decade Plan.
According to a statement from DBP today, Mohamed Hatta, 66, who has been an academic since 1984, had served in three universities, namely Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences (CUCMS) and Universiti Islam Malaysia, Cyberjaya (UIM).
Mohamed Hatta takes over from Professor Datuk Seri Dr Md Salleh Yaapar who held the post since 2012. His appointment is effective from July 9 until June 30, 2021. — Bernama
