KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali is still considering whether to defend his deputy president post in PKR or go for the top position and face his mentor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Rumours have been rife that the PKR number two is eyeing the number one position in the party, which has not gone down well with some party members.
Speaking to the press at the Parliament lobby today, Mohamed Azmin said he would be making a decision on the matter before the party polls in August.
"I will make a decision on that at some point. At the moment, my focus is on the parliament proceedings. I think this should be the priority," he said.
When asked specifically if he would go up against Anwar, Mohamed Azmin posed a question back at the reporters asking what they would suggest, to which a member of the press said: "Go for it."
The Economic Affairs Minister responded saying: "I will announce soon."
Mohamed Azmin was commenting on a statement by outgoing PKR Women's wing chief Zuraida Kamaruddin urging the party to allow its members to challenge any post, including the presidency, while also heaping praise on Mohamed Azmin.
"Azmin is among the dynamic leaders capable of leading. As such, PKR Women stresses that besides welcoming Anwar's offer to contest as president, the party must also respect its constitution by allowing others to contest for any position without any hindrance," she said.
Anwar, who is the PKR de facto leader, had on Sunday announced that he would be contesting for the president's post, saying the decision was made after deliberating the matter with the party's top leadership.
His announcement ended weeks of speculation over his candidacy for the top position.
Meanwhile, PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar said she would be rooting for her father Anwar and fellow vice-president Rafizi Ramli in the party elections.
"There are many who want his (Anwar) rights to be returned to lead the party and Reformasi struggle, including me.
"I want justice for him, and this includes a push for other personalities such as Rafizi to get the same amount of attention," she said.
