Newly appointed senators see it as opportunity to serve the people

KUALA LUMPUR: The Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) chairman, P. Waytha Moorthy considers his appointment as a senator for the second time after 2013, was a mandate to serve the people.
"I'm more than happy with the appointment this time because this is what I want. I want to represent the people in the true sense, not just in name. You know why I resigned the first time, I left (at the time) on grounds of principles because (former Prime Minister) Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak did not keep his promises.
"I had a long discussion with (Prime Minister) Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, and he assured me and I am confident he will give me the mandate to serve the people. I also look forward to serving in the cabinet," he said after being sworn in as a member of the Senate yesterday.
He was among the eight people who were sworn in as senators before Dewan Negara President Tan Sri S. A. Vigneswaran at Parliament House, yesterday.
Also sworn in, was Terengganu Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) chairman Datuk Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad who considers his appointment as a tribute to the people of Terengganu as well as being a medium to convey the people's plight and their problems.
PAS Terengganu commissioner Datuk Hussain Awang said that among matters to be voiced in the Dewan Negara were matters pertaining to the national language that are central to the nation's development.
Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) Ketereh Division chief Dr Mohd Radzi Md Jidin likewise attributed his appointment as a great trust especially in bringing hope to the people.
Meanwhile, Johor DAP chairman Liew Chin Tong promised to serve the people and the country to the best of his ability. — Bernama
