Umno must explain origins of RM116.7m seized in 1MDB raids: Guamnita

PETALING JAYA: Biro Guaman Wanita (Guamnita) today said it was Umno's duty to report to the police about the RM116.7 million seized from Pavilion Residences in Kuala Lumpur during investigations into 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
Its director, Azlinda Baroni said Umno should provide the police details of the source, the person or persons who gave the money and other relevant evidence to prove when and how the money was given.
"The person who allegedly gave Umno the money could have withdrawn it from a bank and proof of this can be provided to the police to back their claims that the money belonged to the party.
"The giver should also be ready to be interrogated by the police on how he or she got such a large amount of money and why they gave it to Umno in the first place.
"Also, why was the money personally given via the party president and why was it hidden instead of being banked in or kept at Umno headquarters?," she asked.
She was responding to reports where Umno lawyers had given the police seven days since Tuesday to provide relevant documents and information on the RM116.7 million seized.
They said a letter had been issued to the police and have given the authorities a "reasonable" seven days to respond.
The lawyers reiterated that the money seized belonged to Umno and was not related to 1MDB nor SRC International Sdn Bhd.
"Umno should actually question itself. If the money is from an illegitimate source, then is the party an accomplice to it also?
"If it is from an illegitimate source, then would Umno still want to proceed to demand for it and claim the money belongs to the party?," added Azlinda.
