KUALA LUMPUR: The Election Commission (EC) is scrutinising and conducting further studies on the implementation of automatic electoral registration and lowering the eligibility age to register as voter.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Liew Viu Keong said the study was being scrutinised as both proposals would involve amendments to existing laws, changes in processes and procedures for voter registration matters and the system and equipment requirements for the implementation of the automatic electoral registration system.
"The government is always open to recommendations from various parties including proposals for automatic registration of voters and lowering the eligible age to register as voters.
"The EC is also responsible for ensuring that every proposed improvement can be implemented successfully and to comply with the requirements of the law in force," he said in a written reply in Dewan Rakyat today.
He said this to answer a question from Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan (PAS-Kota Baru) who wanted to know whether the government planned to implement the automatic electoral roll registration system and reduce the voting age from the current 21 years. — Bernama
